Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 1.0 hour
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end at the steering knuckle and mark the position of the existing castle nut and tie rod threads (count turns or mark relative position) to preserve alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut or retaining fastener securing the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
- Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle taper. Remove the castle nut and withdraw the tie rod end.
- Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod and unscrew the outer tie rod end the recorded number of turns (or to the marked position) to maintain approximate alignment.
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position or the same number of turns as removed.
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle taper and install the castle nut. Torque to factory specification and install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- After installation, have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure correct toe and prevent uneven tire wear.
