Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes (per side)
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, engage parking brake and chock rear wheels. Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and secure it on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the outer tie rod end where it connects to the steering knuckle and the inner tie rod/adjusting sleeve.
- Mark or measure the length from the tie rod end threads to a fixed point on the inner tie rod or adjusting sleeve to preserve alignment during removal.
- Apply penetrating oil to the tie rod end jam nut and tapered stud if needed. Loosen the jam nut securing the tie rod end to the inner tie rod.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut on the tie rod end tapered stud. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod the measured number of turns to match original length, then remove the old unit.
- Install the new outer tie rod end by threading it onto the inner tie rod to the previously recorded position. Make sure threads are engaged properly.
- Insert the tapered stud into the steering knuckle, hand-tighten the nut, then torque to the manufacturer’s specified value. Install a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the tie rod end to secure adjustment. Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
- Torque wheel lug nuts to specification, then test-drive at low speed and inspect for proper steering response. Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure correct toe settings.
