Inner tie rod end designed for 1964–1983 American Motors vehicles, serving as a critical steering linkage component that connects the steering rack to the outer tie rod. This part secures proper toe alignment, reduces play in the steering system, and restores precise wheel control for safer, more reliable handling. Built for durability and long service life, the inner tie rod end is an ideal direct-replacement part for restoration projects and routine maintenance, offering dependable performance and easier installation compared with worn factory units.
Features:
- Fits 1964–1983 American Motors vehicles — inner tie rod end, available for right or left hand applications.
- High-strength steel construction for improved durability and resistance to bending or wear.
- Sealed ball-stud design retains lubrication and helps protect against contaminants.
- Restores steering precision by eliminating play in the inner tie rod connection.
- Designed as a direct replacement for OE-style fitment during restoration or repair.
- Easy to install with common hand tools; suitable for DIY mechanics and professional shops.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30–60 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level surface, chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise front of vehicle with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheel.
- Locate the inner tie rod end on the steering rack and apply penetrating oil to fasteners if corroded.
- Mark the position of the outer tie rod or count the number of threads on the tie rod for reassembly reference to preserve alignment.
- Disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle: remove cotter pin (if present) and loosen castellated nut, then separate taper using a puller or a pickle fork.
- Loosen and remove the lock nut on the tie rod assembly and unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod.
- Unthread the inner tie rod from the steering rack or steering rack adapter. Some models may require removal of a retaining clip—retain hardware if reusing.
- Install the new inner tie rod: thread the new part onto the steering rack to the marked reference or to the OEM specified position. Tighten to the vehicle manufacturer’s torque specification.
- Reassemble the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod using the previously counted threads or alignment marks. Install the outer tie rod into the steering knuckle, tighten the nut to spec, and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- Tighten the tie rod lock nut to secure the assembly and torque all fasteners to OEM specifications.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to spec.
- Have a qualified shop perform a front-end alignment after installation to ensure correct toe and prevent uneven tire wear.
