Outer tie rod end designed for 1965–1983 American Motors vehicles (Rambler, AMC, Javelin, Hornet, Gremlin, Concord, etc.). This replacement outer tie rod end secures the steering linkage to the steering knuckle, maintaining proper alignment and steering response while absorbing road shock and preventing excessive play. Built for durability and reliable performance, it restores steering precision and safety on aging or worn steering systems. Easy to install for DIY mechanics and professional shops alike, it is ideal for restoration or routine maintenance.
Features:
- Fits 1965–1983 American Motors vehicles (outer tie rod end, right and left hand applications).
- Solid forged steel construction for long-lasting strength and resistance to bending or wear.
- Precision ball joint and tapered stud ensure accurate steering alignment and reduced play.
- Protective dust boot and corrosion-resistant finish help extend service life in harsh conditions.
- Direct replacement for worn or damaged outer tie rod ends — restores steering feel and safety.
- Simple swap design allows for straightforward installation with common hand tools.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel to access the tie rod end.
- Locate the outer tie rod end where it connects to the steering knuckle. Use a marker to note the threading position or count turns on the inner/outer tie rod to preserve alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin (if used) and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut on the tie rod stud. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Loosen the jam nut that secures the outer tie rod end to the inner tie rod, then unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
- Install the new outer tie rod end by threading it onto the inner tie rod to the previously noted position (or approximate factory alignment). Tighten the jam nut to secure position.
- Insert the tapered stud into the steering knuckle, tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque, and install a new cotter pin if applicable.
- If the part has a grease fitting, apply grease with a grease gun until the boot slightly expands. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed after installation to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear.
